The Aisne-Marne memorial is located south of south of the village of Belleau (Aisne), France six and one-half miles northwest of Chateau-Thierry. The Aisne-Marne memorial is a beautiful location that features a memorial, cemetery and chapel that was built to honor the memory of the American Soldiers who fought for freedom in World War One and to the 67,000 American soldiers who died in France during World War One.
The Aisne-Marne Cemetery contains the graves of 2,289 war dead, most of whom fought in the vicinity and in the Marne Valley in the summer of 1918. In addition, inscribed in the walls of the Chapel are the names of 1,060 soldiers who were missing in action and whose bodies lay in unknown graves.
I visited France and was able to visit the Aisne-Marne memorial complex with some family and friends. On the grounds of the memorial complex, there are remains of cannons and artillery and trenches where men took cover. There is a hole in the wall of the Memorial Chapel that was made by a German anti-tank gun. It was sobering to see the crosses and stars of David over the 2,288 graves of the men who died in the cemetery and the names of those missing in action in the chapel.
I can’t even begin to imagine the horrors of war experienced by the soldiers of both sides in World War One, the War to end all wars.
