Paris is one of my favorite cities in the world. There is so much history there. I love the food, the atmosphere, and especially the architecture.
One of my favorite places in Paris is the Notre Dame Cathedral. The tradition states that the cathedral was started in about 1163 in the presence of Pope Alexander III. Over the centuries, the cathedral underwent periods of major renovation and upgrades as various new features and additions to the cathedral.
In 1831, Victor Hugo published The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which was a huge success. This increased interest in the cathedral and prompted the beginning of another major upgrade that was completed in 1894.
Renovations and upgrades continued into the 20th and 21st centuries, including a two year renovation of the great organ completed in 1992 and a 10 year cleaning of the west facade completed in the year 2000.
The Notre Dame Cathedral is a beautiful tribute to the tenacity and sacrifice of the architects, craftsmen and builders who labored and toiled to build and upgrade the tribute to the Holy Mother.
