The Fremont Indians lived approximately 1,000 years ago and a group of them lived in a canyon along a creek called Nine Mile Creek near Price, Utah.
This canyon is called Nine Mile Canyon although the canyon itself is almost 40 miles long. The canyon probably received it’s name from Nine Mile creek which runs along it’s length.
Nine Mile Canyon is sometimes called “the world’s longest art gallery” and is home to numerous rock art panels, petroglyphs, pictographs, and hieroglyphics, including the famous “Hunter Panel”. There are an estimated 1,000 rock art sites within the canyon with more than 10,000 images throughout the canyon. Also preserved within the canyon are hundreds of pit-houses, rock shelters and granaries – most located high on the canyon walls or on cliff ledges.
There is a road through the canyon that was recently being paved that should help with the dust from the number of cars passing through the canyon.
If planning to visit, I would recommend visiting in the spring or fall so the hot temperatures do not cause problems with your visit. Plan on stopping often and getting out to view the rock art up close, but please do not touch or deface in any way. Please leave it so our children can enjoy it as well.
Nine Mile Canyon Indian Petroglyph – Hunter Panel
The Hunter Panel is a famous Fremont Indian petroglyph and features hunters with bows and arrows, a horned shamanic figure, and a shield figure in the middle of the bighorn sheep.
Experts have interpreted the panel to have been centered around bringing good luck to the hunt or describing a particularly plentiful hunt.
