Point zero des routes de France is the Kilometre Zero (also written km 0) point of France and has existed for several centuries. It is where distances are traditionally calculated between Paris and other French or foreign cities. The monument is a simple bronze milestone, sealed in a stone of the parvis, about twenty metres from the main entrance of the Notre Dame cathedral.
The Zero point is considered the official centre of the City of Paris and the coordinates of the monument are 48.8534°N 2.3488°E.
We first heard about the monument when we went to France and read about the marker in a guide book that my wife purchased to learn more about France. It is fun to watch people looking for the monument in the courtyard outside the main entrance to the Notre Dame Cathedral. People look around staring at the ground and when they find it, they call to the other people in their group and they all gather around and take pictures in front of the monument. Everyone seems to either stand with their feet right on top of the monument or they will kneel down and kiss the monument.
