The Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also called the Mormons or Latter-day Saints (LDS). The temple was built by members of the Mormon Church and took ~40 years to build (from 1853 to 1893) and is the international symbol of the Church.
The Salt Lake Temple was the 4th temple dedicated by the church in Utah, although it was started first after the Mormon pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley.
The temple walls are nine feet thick at the base of the walls and six feet thick at the top. The walls are built out of granite blocks that were chiseled out of a Granite Quarry located in the Little Cottonwood Canyon about 2o miles from the location of the Salt Lake Temple
The temple is only one of the buildings on Temple Square located at the center of Salt Lake City. Also located in the vicinity of the Salt Lake Temple are the Tabernacle, famous for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the North Visitors Center, the South Visitors Center, and the Assembly Hall. Across the street from Temple Square sits the Conference Center that seats 21,000 people and is probably the largest auditorium style building in the world.
Just to the east of Temple Square is the Church Office Building, the 28 story office building that houses the offices of the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Additionally, the Joseph Smith Memorial Building (formerly called Hotel Utah) is located to the Southeast of Temple Square.
